Here’s the latest from University of California Rice Farm Advisor Luis Espino on the armyworm situation.
Except for one location, true armyworm numbers remain low. Luis advises growers to continue scouting late planted fields.

The due date of the Farm Evaluation and Nitrogen Management Plan reporting for the 2018 crop year was March 1, 2019. We extended the deadline to August 28 for one last opportunity to meet this regulatory requirement established by the Central Valley Water Resources Control Board.

The California Rice Commission (CRC) is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Conservation Programs Workshop to update growers on current conservation opportunities. This workshop will provide information of CRC’s efforts to pursue more Natural Resources Conservation Service funding for annual wildlife practices, the California Ricelands Waterbird Foundation’s new waterbird habitat program starting this spring, as well as an update on California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s winter flooding program.

By this time last year, we were seeing the peak of moth flight, with about 18 true armyworm moths per night, and almost no western yellostriped armyworm moths. This year, true armyworm moths are below 10 per night, except for a couple of locations in Glenn County. If we are going to experience an increase in flight, it might come in the next two weeks.

Looks like the number if moths we are catching is staying low, except for a couple of locations. By this time last year, we were averaging 18 moths per night, mostly all true armyworm. This year, we are not catching more than 10 per night, and in some cases the majority are western yellowstriped armyworm. I have not heard of heavy infestations on headed rice yet.
