UCCE Rice Farm Advisor Luis Espino has been providing updates of the traps set to monitor armyworm moth populations at multiple locations throughout the rice growing region.
Luis writes that “There are a total of 15 traps set up across the Sacramento Valley. Numbers are still low, with a small up-tick in traps located in Glenn and Butte County. About this time last year, we were catching about 4 moths a night; this year we are catching less than one moth a night (and about 1 moth a night at the “Afton Rd and Wickman Rd” and “Hwy 45 and White Rd” locations). Last week was much cooler than usual, delaying development and maybe limiting moth flight. As temperatures go up again this week, we might start seeing catches climb up. Lower moth numbers at this time may result in lower armyworm pressure later or, if numbers climb back up next week, later than usual worm infestations.”
