Rice Weed Information and Updates

The UC Cooperative Extension recently published information on the weedy red rice and winged water-primrose in the Rice Briefs newsletter for May 2016. In the newsletter, you will find information on the weedy red rice with recommendations for best management practices to control the weed. The winged water-primrose as a non-native weed, which recently received “A” rated weed pest and “P” rated seed pest classifications from the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Early monitoring and control are essential in effectively managing these two weeds.

Pyrethroid TMDL for 303(d) listed water bodies

Pyrethroid insecticides have been under scrutiny for several years resulting in recent changes to water quality requirements. The changes set monitoring levels for pyrethroids at nanograms in surface waters. Consistent exceedances of the levels could result in additional restrictions to pyrethroid use, or designate a drain as impaired with future restoration to correct the water quality. Last year, one of the water quality coalitions had a detection that could be problematic under the new standards.
